There are two primary ways for cities in the US to treat tap water for organic contaminants.  They use either chlorine or chloramines to kill bacteria and make our water safe for drinking and bathing. While both methods effectively address bacteria in municipal water supplies, they are often considered health risks and create other issues your household water.

Chlorine loses its strength to kill bacteria over time because it binds with organic material. It also creates harmful by-products called Trihalomethanes, which are considered carcinogenic and environmental pollutants.  When ammonia is added to minimize Trihalomethane production, this dilutes the chlorine’s capacity to kill off bacteria.

According to the California-based Citizens Concerned about Chloramines, chloramines damage pipes, create skin conditions, kill lab rodents, and expose people to increased risks for cancer and asthma.

In most situations, you will be drinking and bathing in one of these chemical disinfectants.  In addition, if you choose one of the most common water filters on the market, you may not effectively remove chloramines. Most water filters that use standard carbon provide only partial protection. Chloramines are a challenge for regular carbons to remove.
